Needs Assessment Requires Experience, Objectivity, Confidentiality and Efficiency
Jonena Relth, President and Leadership Evangelist
IF done right, a needs assessment will positively impact your return on investment (ROI).
As performance improvement professionals, we are naturally approached with requests for training development and delivery. These are two of TBD’s core competencies, but we would do our clients a huge disservice if we simply sprang into action to develop instructor-led or online curriculum without first pausing to ask some important questions, such as:
-
What gives you the impression that your employees don’t know how to perform the job or task?
-
Have they already received training for this skill?
-
Is there anything else that might prevent or discourage their expected performance on the job?
-
How is their lack of performance in this area affecting your customers? Your bottom line?
Once we have answers to a few basic questions, we conduct a needs assessment to determine whether it is the lack of skills, knowledge, training or other factors that are preventing your employees from doing their best on the job. When you can affect a positive change in performance, you can increase your ROI and improve your employee and customer satisfaction.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall . . .”I can see all obstacles in my way.”
Leadership Transparency starts at home. Today more than ever-this means seeing clearly who you are! Yes, you! What are you “all about”?
If you have doubts about yourself and about knowing (down deep inside) what really makes you “tick,” how can you expect to size up other people, systems, operations, and circumstances in positive enough ways to make a real difference?
Don’t you need to be confidently assessing options and accurately anticipating outcomes on a daily basis? Hourly, perhaps? If you’re doing that based on what you used to know about your old self, you’re probably leading and managing by the seat of your pants . . . not a good thing if you ever need to sit down!
Maybe it’s not likely you’ll find all the answers to your wonderful self without spending some mountaintop guru years contemplating your navel and your role as a speck in the universe. But . . .
But there are a number of steps you can begin to take (and integrate into your ongoing routines) that should help you unfold some of your life’s biggest mysteries in meaningful practical application ways.

Do you Lead with Transparency or Power?
Jonena Relth, President and Leadership Evangelist
I’ve been watching over the past few years as the topic of leadership continues to be top priority of “healthy” companies. They are pulling out all the stops to provide every opportunity available to help their leaders improve their skills in this area – and this when so many high-profile leaders have fallen from grace in the recent years. Instead of shrinking from the topic, these smart companies are pushing it to the forefront. They know that to succeed, their organizations have to be led by individuals who inherently are worthy of their employees’, customers’ and peers’ trust, and it’s these leaders who will be followed in the days and years to come.
Have you noticed that as a country, we start paying closer attention to what our corporate and political leaders say and do following the failure and/or fall of otherwise respected leaders? And given the leadership issues today, one would have to ask, “Why would anyone want to be a famous leader?” My vote is for the rush of power!
Power gives us a head trip that makes us “feel” as though we are important and respected by others. The flip-side however, is that the more power we have, the more responsibility we have, the more headaches and illness that plague us, the more scrutiny we endure, and of course, ultimately less time to spend for ourselves and loved ones.
