Lean in Healthcare or ‘We’re working the wrong problem.’
    by: Ken Pilone

With all the fuss about the ‘Obamacare’ legislation, it seems we have lost sight of the REAL problem here.  All of the attention seems to be focused on how to pay for our nation’s healthcare needs.  Rarely if ever do you hear anybody asking, “Why are health costs so high in the first place?”
The question needs first to be asked, why providers charge so much.  While there are no easy answers, this much is clear:  The entire end-to-end process of providing health services is riddled with waste!

There are at least two ways to look at the formula for making a profit.  The first and most common is, cost + profit = price.  You have only to look at the Post Office to see how this plays out.  Their motto might be, “Inefficient, no problem.  Just raise the price of a stamp.”  This formula doesn’t allow for any scrutiny into what drives cost in the first place.  The second formula, and the one most overlooked is, price – cost = profit.  This works well in highly competitive markets where price is more or less dictated by the customer and thus is essentially fixed.

    leadership teamLeaders Create Meaning

    Guest Author: Bob Whipple

Too many people go to work each day in a zombie-like state where they go through the motions all day and try to stay out of trouble with the boss. Work life is a meaningless array of busywork foisted upon them by the clueless morons who run the place. They hate the environment and intensely dislike their co-workers. Their suffering is tolerated only because there is no viable option for them to survive.  What a pity that anyone would spend even a single day on this earth in such a hopeless atmosphere.

We can fault the individuals who allow themselves to be trapped in this way, but I believe the environment created by leaders has a great deal to do with this malaise. Reason: if you put these same individuals in an environment of trust and challenge, nearly all of them would quickly rise up to become happy and productive workers. It is essential that each individual in the workforce find real meaning in the work being done, and the responsibility is on leaders to make that happen.

Some good research into this conundrum was presented by Viktor Frankl a half century ago in his famous book, Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl posits that it “is a peculiarity of man that he must have something significant yet to do in his life, for that is what gives meaning to life.”  He discovered this universally human trait while surviving the most horrible of life conditions in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. One cannot imagine a more oppressive environment, but believe it or not, many people at work feel like they are in a kind of concentration camp. The antidote is for leaders to create something significant yet to do.

Coach Talk: The Wisdom of Charlie Brown

    Guest Author: Bob Craig

The Wisdom of Charlie Brown: Happiness is being recognized in one’s own lifetime. It is really one of the important things you do as a leader: reward those who do a great job for your customers, you, or your company. I watched a little girl the other morning in my son’s tennis class. The Coach in charge gets it. He knows the power of what he says. To this little girl who was having a hard time getting the ball over the net, he said in his great big voice, “Hey, Sara! Look at you swing that great big racket right from the top, as far as you can reach up… I like that. You’re good!” And little Sara, totally changed… ran for a new set of three tennis balls, ran back to the line, reached up high and knocked two out of three over the net. And she heard “Alright, Sara; that’s what I’m talkin’ about.”

If you have folks on your team who are doing “what YOU are talkin’ about”, figure out a way to reward that. Get a bulletin board of fame or something that is clearly for accomplishments. Reward and recognition is an on-going part of your job and one you want to start each day with just like Sara’s Coach. It is so simple, even Charlie Brown gets it!
