by: Jonena Relth, President and Leadership Evangelist

Well, I told you so!  I’m at the Leadership Challenge Learn It, Teach It, Share It, Live It Conference in San Diego and it’s everything I hoped!
Jim Kouzes kicked off the day by talking about the 10 Truths of Leadership, the subject of his newest book with Barry Posner, The Truth about Leadership – The NO-FADS, Heart-of-the-Matter Facts You Need to Know.  I’ll share the 10 Truths for now and follow-up with another post after the conference.
Truth 1. You Make a Difference
    - Any of us can make an impact.
Truth 2. Credibility if the Foundation of Leadership
    - Great Leaders are Honest, Forward Looking, Inspiring and Competent.
    Truth 3. Values Drive Commitment
    - We need to share our values and spend more time telling people who we are and where we plan to go with our organization.

Coach Talk: Who Packs Your Parachute

    Guest Author: Bob Craig

Charles Plumb, a US Navy jet pilot in Vietnam flew 75 successful combat missions until his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience. One day, when Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said, “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!”
“How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb
    .
“I packed your parachute,” the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, “I guess it worked!” Plumb assured him, “It sure did. If your chute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Plumb couldn’t sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, “I kept wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said Good morning, how are you? or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor.

Six Tech-Enabled Business Trends to Watch

    by: Hal Amens, guest author

Please help me welcome our newest guest blogger, Hal Amens.  Jonena

Hal is the President of Lyon, Popanz & Forester, a management consulting company that works in the white space of organizations between internal departments, in contractual ambiguity and regulatory complexity. He works in those white spaces to define problems so they can be solved, design solutions so they can be implemented, and structure implementation so it can be managed.  To reach Hal:  LinkedIn,  EMRnet, and hal9007@gmail.com

    ***********************
The August 2010 issue of the McKinsey Quarterly is titled: “Ten tech-enabled business trends to watch.” http://goo.gl/cpqN  Six of the trends are related to EMRs and EHRs. I have retained the original item numbers in the following list:
Making the network the organization: The traditional silos of most large organizations limit the ability of the organization to take advantage of distributed knowledge. Internal networks facilitate time and knowledge sharing based, “… on the orchestration of tasks rather than the ‘ownership’ of workers.” EMRs provide one of a number of organizational networks that can facilitate task based knowledge transfer.
Collaboration at scale: Networks facilitate collaboration but don’t necessarily foster it. Management and organizational learning is required to realize large scale collaboration. “The next leap forward in the productivity of knowledge workers will come from interactive technologies combined with complementary investment in process innovations and training. Strategic choices, such as whether to extend collaboration networks to customer and suppliers, will be important.” Suppliers of medical services are already part of EMRs to the extent their services and test results are included.
